After sweeping Groesbeck and Mexia last week, the Madisonville Mustangs took control of the District 19-3A basketball race and eliminated the only other unbeaten team in the loop when they took out Mexia here last Friday. “If we can ever start making our free throws and stop making senseless turnovers, we could have a very special season,” said Coach Brian Thurmond after Friday's 62-50 win over the Blackcats. The Mexia win followed on the heels of a 56-50 victory over Groesbeck and put the No. 16 state-ranked Mustangs at 3-0 in district and 20-2 overall. The 'Stangs opened the week on the road and after a first period 14-14 tie, carved out a 33-28 halftime lead. Neither team scored well in the third period, but the Mustangs did manage to push their lead to 42-36 going into the final period. Trailing by 6 points after the first quarter, the Mustangs finally pulled even with the Blackcats and took their first lead of the game with 1:26 to play in the second period, 29-28. Both teams traded field goals the rest of the way, and the score was 32-32 at intermission. The Mustang defense tightened up in the third period, enabling Madisonville to enjoy an 11-9 run in the third, then the Mustangs put together a 19-12 run in the fourth to close the deal.
