Mustangs open tennis season at Corsicana

The Lady Mustangs took second place honors and the Mustangs finished fourth in their first team tennis outing of the year at the Corsicana Tournament Jan. 17.

The Madisonville teams competed against 4-A and 5-A junior varsity squads and 3-A and 2-A varsities in the eight-team event.

Terressa Ward picked up where she left off last season, winning the girls singles in what turned out to be a bittersweet victory since she had to oust teammate Raynie Standley, 9-7, in the finals.

In mixed doubles, Lindy Shaw and Jesse Hellums took second place in Corsicana. They won a 9-7 tiebreaker over Corsicana to open, then defeated Consol, 8-5, and Midlothian, 8-5, finally losing to Corsicana, 4-8, in the finals.

En route to winning the girls singles, Ward drew a bye in the opening round, then won 8-2, 8-5 and 9-8 decisions over Van, Corsicana and A&M Consolidated, respectively, before facing Standley.

Standley finished second after 8-0, 8-3, 8-4 and 8-5 wins over Midlothian, Ennis, Consol and Corsicana.

Dana Hoke won, 8-0, over Centerville, then lost, 2-8, to Corsicana to bow out.

In doubles play, Courtney Mason and Nicole Wakefield defeated Corsicana, 8-2, then lost to Consol, 4-8.

Charli Andrews and Alexis Kaisharis defeated Palestine, 8-1, then lost, 0-8, to eventual doubles champs Corsicana.

In boys singles competition, Armondo Saldana drew a first-round bye, then defeated Van, 8-2, before losing to Corsicana in the quarterfinals, 5-8.

Adam Livingston and Gilberto Arevalo opened boys doubles play with an 8-2 win over Corsicana and an 8-1 victory over Consol. They lost to Centerville in the quarterfinals, 7-9.

Daniel Sanders and Shane Spangler lost, 4-8, to Corsicana in the opener, then dropped a 6-8 decision to Palestine.

Coach Jud Robinson's teams will be in action again here on Jan. 24 in a tri-meet with Teague and Shepherd beginning at 4 p.m. this Thursday.
