Midway set for annual ‘Po-Boy' steak dinner

Any “po-boy” looking for a big steak dinner is in luck, if he hurries to get tickets to the upcoming Midway VFD “Po-Boy” Steak Dinner and Dance.

The 16th annual event is set for Feb. 23 at the Midway VFD Building, starting with hospitality hour at 6 p.m., then dinner at 7.

The dinner includes an 18 to 24-ounce T-bone steak, a baked potato with all the trimmings, green beans, roll, dessert and a drink. Danny Unterreiner and Billy and Carolyn Blow will be preparing and cooking the steaks again this year. Steaks may be ordered rare, medium or well done.

“If you haven't experienced the pleasure of attending this great event,” said Fire Chief Lance Ferguson, “you have really missed out on tasting some mouth-watering food. Once you've been to a steak dinner you can't wait for the next one.”

Ferguson said the VFD members are still making final plans for the big night as well as looking for sponsors to help defray the costs of putting on the dinner.

“Last year we served a little more than 500 steaks,” he said, “and that takes a lot of work to put together.”

The Re-Hab Team, which consists of the firefighters' wives and girlfriends, will handle the serving line. At the dinner, the fire department will honor its outstanding firefighters and junior firefighters, name honorary lifetime firefighters and recognize the sponsors of the event.

After dinner, the evening will continue with music by popular music group FM 2865, formerly known as Coolwater Country. Those who don't attend the dinner may still enjoy the dance, which starts at 9. Tickets for the dinner go for $35, which also includes the hospitality hour and admission to the dance. Tickets for the dance alone may be purchased at the door for $10.

Ferguson encouraged supporters to buy their tickets early since the number of dinner tickets sold at the door will be limited. Tickets may be purchased at Lakeside Restaurant, Red's Barber Shop, Henson Service Center or from any Midway VFD member. To help with sponsorship or for more information about the dinner, contact Lance or Sherry Ferguson at 348-7378 or 348-6931, or Linda Bayless at 936-349-1991.
