Whaley tabbed for pre-season honors

Madisonville High School senior Chris Whaley is in consideration to play in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The game will be played next January in San Antonio at the Alamodome.

This nationally televised event provides high school seniors a platform to display their talents to a wide audience and compete against America's best. Whaley's nomination is one of 400 in consideration for selection to the game.

“The U.S. Army is proud to recognize Chris Whaley as one of America's top high school football student athletes,” said Col. David Lee, Director of Strategic Outreach, Marketing and Outreach for the U.S. Army Accessions Command.

“We're proud to honor these young Americans, their families and coaches for their efforts.'

Of the 400 nominees, 90 will ultimately be selected and invited to the bowl game.

The 90 finalists will be officially recognized and selected to the bowl this fall when the bowl's selection tour visits each high school to hold a school-wide presentation.

Upon making it to the game, the selected players are then divided into teams of East and West.

The U.S. Army All American Bowl is considered the nation's premier All-American game by both participants and fans of high school football.

The game is owned by SportsLink, and can be seen Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, on NBC.

Additionally, Whaley has been selected as the Class 3-A Coverboy in this summer's upcoming edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, according to Madisonville head football coach and athletic director Greg Morgan.
