DPS trooper tragedy

A retired Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was found dead in the George Cemetery from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Larry Martin, 52, of Mission was found dead of the self-inflicted gunshot wound around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, said Madison County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ivan Linebaugh. A note outlining Martin's funeral arrangements was found near the body, he said.

Martin is the son of L.C. Martin of Huntsville, and his family is originally from the George community. He was working as a pilot for DPS in McAllen at

the time of his retirement, Linebaugh said. Martin had previously worked as a DPS trooper in Walker County, he added.
