Recount shows Plumlee prevails in tax assessor-collector race

Roxanne McKnight with The Meteor

The recount in the very close race for Madison County tax assessor-collector showed that Beverly Plumlee will keep her position, beating Michele Clary 2025 to 2014.

"I am so glad it's over," said Plumlee on Saturday evening, Nov. 15, after she had been notified of the results. "We knew that's how the count would come out, and we're glad it came out this way.

"Thanks, Michele, for a good and clean race," she added.

County officials took most of the day to do the recount by hand after getting each voting machine to output its results.

All the final election returns are now recorded, including provisional ballots, overseas military ballots and write-ins. No races changed winners, but voters whose ballots were in any of these categories can now feel satisfied that their votes were counted.

Madison County elections administrator Earl Parker reported that there were 12 provisional ballots in the recent election. When they were reviewed, seven were approved while five were rejected, based upon the fact that the voters were not registered.

The county received two overseas military ballots. The law allows them to be counted even if they arrive as late as five days after the election.

In the write-ins for the presidential race, in Madison County, Chuck Baldwin received six votes, Ralph Nadar got five, and Jonathan Allen, Alan Keyes and Cynthia McKinney each received one vote.

There was an error in The Meteor's table last week showing initial election results. The initial results for Mark Thompson, running for railroad commissioner should have read 1444, not 1454. In the final results, he received two additional votes, bringing his total to 1456.
