District 24-3A is still new for the Lady Mustangs in basketball, but that did not stop the varsity girls from starting the district schedule with a win.

Caldwell was in Madisonville to take on the Lady Mustangs on Dec. 16. Madisonville scored high in the second and third quarters, while their defense allowed only five and eight points from the Lady Hornets. Caldwell beat Madisonville’s scoring in the third quarter, but the Lady ’Stangs already had more than enough for the victory, 76-40.

Trinicia Shaffer was impressive with 20 points, five rebounds and nine steals. Brittney Collins scored 15 points, and Unique Johnson was not far behind with 14 points. Adrianna Gilbert had a good offensive game and scored nine points. April Curtis was good on the defensive front and made 12 rebounds, along with six points. Yrhye Betts and Anesia Robinson each scored five points, and Robinson had 10 rebounds as well. Kaleesha Davis contributed two points and made three rebounds. Betts also made four rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs continued in district action this past Friday, Dec. 19, in Rockdale. After a break this week, they will next compete in the Taco Bell Classic at Willis next Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 29-31. The district schedule will resume later in the week on Jan. 2 when Madisonville begins the new calendar year at home against the Taylor Ducks at 6:30 p.m. or immediately following the junior varsity game.
