The Madisonville softball team dropped a pair of district matchups last week to La Vega and Robinson, both at MHS, to fall to 1-2 in league play. The Lady Mustangs looked to bounce back Tuesday with a road matchup in China Spring.

Madisonville’s Mason Railsback and Elizabeth Guevara competed in a 5A/6A tournament at Rudder High School last week as a mixed doubles unit and earned third place by defeating Irving Nimitz. The duo suffered their only loss of the season at the prestigious tournament to 6A Tomball Memorial.

Cap: Madisonville native Tra’Dayja Smith recorded six assists and 11 points to lead the Longwood Lancers to a 74-70 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament’s opening round Thursday. She also led the Lancers with 25 points and six assists in a loss to the number one seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack in Raleigh Saturday. The Madisonville softball team defeated Mexia 18-6 to open district play 1-0 at MHS Friday. The Lady Mustangs looked to make it two straight in league play with another home matchup against La Vega Tuesday.

The Madisonville baseball team split a pair of non-district matchups over the week with an 11-0 loss at Bellville March 15 and a 12-2 win over Palestine at MHS Friday. The Mustangs competed against Giddings in their non-district finale Tuesday and will host Robinson in their league opener Friday.

The Madisonville soccer team earned a slot in the postseason with a fourth place district finish and will battle Kilgore in the Bi-District playoffs in Huntsville Thursday at 6:30 p.m. “We are just going to have to come out and play some good soccer, be mistake free and leave everything on the field,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes regarding the Bi-District matchup.

Sprinter Garlanesha Hickman-Gilbert scored in all three of her events during a recent track and field meet. The Madisonville High School graduate finished second in the 100-meter dash at the Jet Relays, her second meet of the spring.

The Madisonville track program competed in the Eagle Relays at Woodville High School Thursday and showcased a second place finish on the varsity men’s side with 63 points behind first place Lumberton. Rayce Hudson was the division’s second Top Athlete with 19 individual points while Lorenzo Johnson was ninth with 12. The varsity women’s squad finished fifth overall with 49 points while the junior varsity men’s side fished third with 71 total points behind top-ranked Jasper and Woodville. Members of the Madisonville varsity tennis team shined during a tournament in Taylor March 11, garnering a number of first place finishes. On the men’s side, the doubles duo of Steven Payan and Ivan Vera took first place while Avery Barker and Nate Fleck placed third.
