The Madison County Broncos minor league football team fell 21-18 to the Texas Xtreme of Austin in the opening game of the 2017 season.
The Broncos' defense and special teams played strong in the opening period with an interception returned for a touchdown putting the Broncos up 6-0 with 3:50 remaining in the first, but a missed two-point conversion kept the Broncos from extending the lead.
The Xtreme eventually got on the scoreboard scoring a touchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter. The Broncos didn't score in the second and trailed at the half 15-6.
"The Xtreme are one of the toughest teams in the league, but our guys fought hard," said quarterback Aundre Simms. "Everything that we can control as a team will be fixed by next week’s game."
The Broncos came storming back outscoring the Xtreme in the second half 12-6, but couldn't complete the second half comeback.
"I'm proud of how the team played and held their composure in the second half," said Coach Gilbert. "We shocked the league, playing like that against [the Xtreme] and we will probably see them again in the playoffs."
The Broncos host the Texas Crusaders in TUFA's "game of the week" Saturday at Mustang Stadium. The game is set to promote cancer awareness. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
