Broncos ready to kick off

Madison County’s new minor league football team, the Madison County Broncos, kickoff their much anticipated season Saturday, Feb. 18 at Mustang Stadium. As the Broncos wrapped up its final practice Sunday evening in advance of Saturday’s season opener, Herbert Gilbert of the Broncos coaching staff preached discipline as a key factor in the success, the team hopes to have this season.

“It’s all about staying focused,” said Coach Gilbert. “There’s been a long layoff between the preseason game we played last month and the official season opener happening this Saturday, so it’s important for our guys to stay focused. Keep that same drive and hunger because now it counts.”

The Broncos first opponent of their inaugural season will be the Texas Xtreme of Austin and Defensive Coach Otis Moten hopes his team shows the same effort and energy during the season opener as they did in the preseason.

“That preseason game went far better than we could have imagined,” said Moten. “The guys played very well and with a lot of passion and drive throughout the [opening] game and that has to continue Saturday against the Xtreme.”

Preparing for a season is a long process but Moten believes his guys have put in the work and therefore are ready for the challenge.

“We have been pushing ourselves for months, we push our limits of endurance and mental toughness. We build on that base, learning plays, strengthening our defense and everything else to get ready for the first game,” Moten said.

Owner and General Manager of the Broncos Lakeshia Byrd, echoes the thoughts of the team’s coaching staff.

“This game [against the Xtreme] is predicted to be our biggest competition of the season,” said Byrd. “We are facing a championship caliber team, but our guys are prepared and ready.”

The Broncos will have their final walkthrough Saturday before the game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
