Broncos win preseason opener

The Madison County Broncos had their first preseason game on Saturday against the San Antonio Gators and many members of the Madisonville community had the privilege of being there.

The Broncos made their debut, greeted with a standing and extremely loud ovation from the home crowd.

“The community came out in a big way,” said owner and general manager Lakeisha Byrd. “There was a tremendous amount of support opening night. We are overwhelmed and thankful for everyone who came out to support the guys.”

The Broncos, who have been working tirelessly on the field for months, never trailed in the preseason contest, defeating the Gators, 60-14.

“I think it was a good first game for our players,” said co-owner and starting quarterback Aundre Simms. “Most importantly the love and support that was shown from the community means a lot more to us players than what was going on, on the field. We just want to grow and grow and grow – that’s our goal.”

However, despite their dominant performance in the home opener members of the coaching staff say they still believe there is another level the team can reach.

“I’m proud of the guys and how well they played,” said Coach Herbert Gilbert. “But we have to be aware that there will be better competition down the line. So we can’t become complacent or stagnant in our approach to the game. We have to keep the momentum going.”

Fans said they looked forward to supporting the Broncos this season.

“We’re excited about what these guys are doing not just on the field but in the community – it’s exciting,” said a local resident.

The Broncos will return to the practice field this week as they prepare for the regular season slated to start Feb. 18, at home against the Texas Extreme.
