NORTH ZULCH — The North Zulch volleyball team capitalized on a crucial week with two wins in their district over Centerville and Normangee.
The Bulldogs are in a three-way tie for third place in district and only the top 4 teams will advance to the postseason.
“This is a special and talented group of girls,” said North Zulch head coach Kimberly Branch. “They know what they need to do to position themselves for the playoffs.”
The Bulldogs began the week last Tuesday with a win in Centerville. North Zulch took the conference matchup with a total team effort in four sets. Cassidy Brown led the way with consistency from the service line. She recorded 8 uncontested serves in game 4 to put North Zulch on top 11-3 early.
Raegan VanCour, Anna Osth and Megan Massy combined for 20 kills on the night, but it was Alley Grier who sealed the deal with a massive block to end the fourth set.
Friday’s win over Normangee was the first home game for North Zulch since Sept. 19. The Bulldogs didn’t disappoint their home crowd and took down their opponent in straight sets to even up their record with Normangee’s.
“We struggled in the first half of district play,” said Branch. “The girls have really regrouped for the second half so far and are more determined to win now than ever.”
The Bulldogs won’t know whether or not they qualify for the postseason until after their last game against Grapeland at home. If North Zulch is able to win the remainder of their games, they will qualify for the playoffs for sure. If they drop one or more of their remaining five contests, it will depend on the rest of their district.
“There’s no doubt this team has the talent,” said Branch. “It’s now just a matter of executing and finishing the games we need to in order to advance.”
The Bulldogs took on Iola at home last night and will welcome Latexo to their gym on Friday evening. JV is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. immediately followed by the Varsity squads at 6.
North Zulch will then travel to Kennard on Oct. 17 and conclude their season with home matches against Lovelady and Grapeland on Oct. 20 and 24.
