Bulldogs hoops set for new season

NORTH ZULCH — The North Zulch Bulldogs basketball team is set for the new season as they look to build on a solid 2016 campaign.

The Bulldogs welcome back four starters to a roster with six seniors as well as ninety percent of their scoring from last year.

“Our expectations are to win each day and commit to defense as well as the development of our team as we prepare for District,” said head basketball coach David Graves. “We have set our team goals and will stay focused on those and we will be successful if we can accomplish them.”

Graves has been in charge of the men’s basketball program for three years now. In 2016, the Bulldogs finished third in District and qualified for the postseason. He expects to see a lot of leadership out of his experienced roster and strides from the underclassmen.

“We should see a lot of mentoring from a senior-heavy roster,” said Graves. “I expect our younger players to work hard for the seniors so we can all make this a memorable run for them. They can also learn who they are within our system.”

In his tenure at North Zulch, Graves has worked to instill hard work in his players on and off the court. He wants his players to learn that you need to give more effort than anybody else for what you believe in and what you wish to accomplish as a person.

“You can’t work hard for a team if you can’t work hard for yourself,” said Graves. “If you’re not willing to put in the work, you won’t accomplish any of your goals in any aspect of life.”

The Bulldogs began their non-District slate against Aggie Land and Mumford. They will battle opponents such as these until Jan. 12, when their District schedule begins with road game in Burton. The regular season will last until Feb. 13 and will be immediately followed by the State Playoffs.

The North Zulch women’s basketball team began work this week following the conclusion of the volleyball season. We will preview their 2017 season in next week’s paper.
