The North Zulch Bulldogs volleyball squad bounced back nicely over the last week and picked up two district wins in straight sets.
“It’s always nice to pick up a couple of wins,” said Bulldog head coach Kimberly Branch. “We expected tough matches from the start of district, but the girls are resilient and have their end goal in mind.”
Last Tuesday, the Bulldogs took advantage of Kennard mistakes and left the gym with an easy victory. Kennard’s highest point total in the three matches was 16, but they tallied as little as 8 in the second.
Friday night in Latexo would prove to be a little more challenging. Despite two very close games to start the match, North Zulch found a way to win them both as well as the third set to leave Latexo with a sweep. The final scores were 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16.
Coach Branch highlighted Raegan VanCour as one of her most all-around, dynamic players in Friday’s win. The senior recorded 8 kills and 3 blocks. Senior Sally Osth led the team with 18 kills and senior Cassidy Brown served 11 points in the final match, including 3 aces. Freshman Cheyanne Wallin also impressed with 6 kills.
“The team has overcome illness and injuries and are finally getting back to normal,” said Branch. “Moving forward, we will need to continue being aggressive.”
After back-to-back, all-around team efforts to seemingly gain back their mojo, the Bulldogs continued their district schedule last evening in Lovelady. They will travel to Centerville on Friday night, where JV will start at 5 p.m. with Varsity to follow at 6.
North Zulch will return home on Oct. 6 to host Normangee. There are just seven games remaining on the regular season schedule before the state playoffs are under way.
