After placing third at a tournament in Snook over the weekend, the North Zulch volleyball team welcomed the Blue Jays to their home last night for a regular season matchup.
Snook would prevail in four sets on the night despite a very vocal presence by the North Zulch student section. Still, the Bulldogs showed impressive resilience in the third set to avoid the sweep on the night. North Zulch found themselves hanging by a thread and was down to their last point on three occasions.
Since you have to win by two points in volleyball, a winning score of 25 wasn’t enough to decide the set. The Bulldogs were finally able to gain the ultimate advantage and stay alive with a thrilling 31-29 victory in the third set.
North Zulch would have to be satisfied with the one nail-biting victory. They kept the fourth set close but could not find the same magic and force a fifth and final match to 15 that would decide the game. Snook gained an early advantage in the opening sets, which proved too much for the Bulldogs to overcome despite their best efforts.
The Bulldogs will continue their regular season this weekend. They will remain at home and welcome Centerville to North Zulch on Friday at 5 p.m. The JV squad is set to play right before Varsity at 4. JV will also compete in a tournament at College Station that begins tomorrow.
The Varsity matchup with Centerville will also be the final non-district matchup of the season for the Bulldogs. They will start league play on Tuesday and travel to Normangee for a 6 p.m. contest for Varsity, 5 for JV.
After this weekend’s matchup with Centerville, the Bulldogs won’t return home to play at North Zulch until they welcome district opponent Kennard on Sep. 19.
