BUFFALO — The North Zulch Bulldogs went 1-3 at the Christmas showdown in Buffalo last week, taking down Moulton, suffering brutal losses to Anderson and Buffalo, and missing a close call with Romeo Prep.
Although they didn’t put a lot of numbers in the W column, the boys showed their stuff in individual competition, as junior Weston Wolf won a slam-dunk contest and senior Hans Osth placed second in a three-pointer competition.
Sophomore Gerhart Wiese scored an incredible 23 points in the Bulldogs’ opener against Paris-based Romeo Preparatory Academy on Dec. 29, but it wasn’t enough for a win, as Romeo Prep took the game, 68-62.
North Zulch then faced Moulton and won 65-57, with team captain Hans Osth scoring 18 points.
The Bulldogs had an ugly showdown with the Buffalo Bison on Dec. 30. Sophomore guard Tye Douga had a nice three-pointer in the second quarter, and Osth, a 6-foot-5-inch senior, continued to show his leadership on the court.
But the Bulldogs were outmatched, and couldn’t keep up with the Bison offense, ending with a final score of 97-37.
Their final game of the tournament was a face-off with Anderson-Shiro, which the Owls took, 61-41.
“I think the tournament was a good challenge for us as a team right before we tip off district this week,” said Bulldogs Head Coach David Graves. “I wanted a tournament that would give us a good challenge where we are with bigger schools – and it showed. It was humbling to see us as a team battle adversity and fight through different aspects. I thank Coach Welch at Buffalo for the opportunity.”
North Zulch is now 9-9 overall and will face Richards at home on Friday, starting at 6 p.m.

The North Zulch Lady Bulldogs are ready for action after coming off an extended break during the holiday season.
The Lady Bulldogs, 10-3 overall, played at Buckholts on Tuesday, and are already preparing for home games vs. Richards on Friday, Calvert on Jan. 12 and Kennard on Jan. 15.
The girls are undefeated in district play, and Head Coach Marshall Earnhart said he expects to see big things from the athletes in the coming games.
“Over the break our practices consisted of fundamentals,” Earnhart said. “We have been working on fine-tuning our offense and footwork. My assistant coaches have done an excellent job of scouting our next four opponents.”
