A century and a year have come to pass in the life of Cecilia Dorothy Hibner Hartnett. Cecilia passed away on Sunday morning June 5, 2016, at the home of her daughter-in-law in Madison County. Her wish was to be cremated and those services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.
Cecilia was born to Joe and Sophie Seibert in Cameron, Texas on October 3,1914. Cecilia graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Galveston, Texas. She married Joseph Hartnett, Sr., who was from Galveston and they were married for 60 years until his death. Cecilia was a strong lady who loved unconditionally. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galveston which is now Holy Family Catholic Church working faithfully for many years in both the school and the church in many areas, she was a member of the Catholic Family Fraternal-KJCT and a member of the Galveston Garden Club where she served many offices including president. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas in College Station after moving there to be near her children. She continued her commitment to her church and faith receiving Communion each week through St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church after moving to be with her daughter-in-law in Madisonville.
Cecilia’s life was encapsulated in the lives of her three sons Joseph (Mutt), John and James, and her daughter, Sue. Cecilia loved gardening, playing bridge and traveling going to Europe, Hawaii and many other places. She loved to entertain and cook, and her tapioca and cookies long will be remembered by her family as the best ever.
Her parents, her husband Joseph Hartnett Sr., one son, Joseph (Mutt) Hartnett Jr., her daughter, Sue, and her brothers and sisters all preceded her in death. She is survived by sons John Hartnett and wife, Carolyn, James Hartnett and wife, Shaula, her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Hartnett, her 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Madisonville on July 9, 2016, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mike Barone as the celebrant. A family inurnment service will be held at a later date in Galveston at New City Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Hospice Brazos Valley and Mary Helen Morrow, M.D. for the loving, compassionate, excellent care given to Cecilia.
