City hires new patrol officer

Madisonville Police Department continues bolstering its resources, adding another new hire this month.

Ryan Dowdy, 25, joined the force on June 20. The Sam Houston State University graduate has a degree in criminal justice, and has wanted to be a cop since he was a high school student in Round Rock.

“I wanted to help people and be involved in the community,” Dowdy said.

Although he still lives in Huntsville, he’s familiar with Madison County because he worked at the local Buc-ee’s while in college.

The new officer has gone through a 10-month police academy in Houston but will rotate riding with more seasoned lawmen for a three-month period before he’s turned loose on his own. During his first week on the job, he got acclimated with administrative work, and said he’s anxious to hit the streets.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about Madisonville and the police department here,” he said.

In fact, although he doesn’t come from a law enforcement family, Dowdy’s teenage sister has already decided she wants to follow in his footsteps.

“My family is really supportive,” he said.
