Coach Thurmond and the Mustangs look for big season

Three returning starters and key returners highlight the Madisonville boys’ basketball roster this season.

Leading the returning class are juniors Kasey Williamson, Sam Bennett, Tommy Holiday and Cornelius Merchant and senior Deonte McAdams. The Mustangs, who were 26-8 last season (6-2 in conference) led by Head Coach Brian Thurmond, look to build on last season’s strong finish.

“It’s all about getting better,” Thurmond said. “I think we’ve got some depth. But some of those kids are going to take some time.”

The Mustangs won two of their three-preseason scrimmages, beating Franklin and A &M Consolidated, before losing to Mumford in their third game.

“These scrimmages are in place to help me get a gauge for where my team is mentally and physically heading into the season,” Thurmond said. “When the season starts we will be ready.”

Madisonville will open the season at home hosting Huntington on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m.
