College football season is just about the most exciting time in Texas.
I freely admit to being a fair-weather Texas A&M football fan. I likely went to more games when I was in high school than when I was actually a student at A&M.
My reasons for skipping home games were pretty simple and extremely selfish: It was always hot, and you had to stand up, and. On one particular occasion I went with a blind date who had been to something called the White Trash Bash the evening prior and reportedly threw up all over the place all night. You can imagine how much I was hoping the Aggies wouldn’t score a touchdown that day so I wouldn’t have to kiss my date.
A&M football got a little positive national attention during the Johnny Manziel Heisman years and a little negative national attention during the Johnny Manziel lost-his-dang-mind years. Now my alma mater is back in the news as starting quarterback Trevor Knight is rumored to be dating Sadie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame.
Knight, along with A&M offensive lineman Koda Martin and volleyball standout Jazzmin Babers will be the featured speakers at an event starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Grace Bible Church Southwood campus, 1901 Harvey Mitchell Parkway, in College Station.
I can’t say enough good things about Grace Bible Church, and I’m looking forward to attending this event and hearing the testimonies of these student athletes. Food trucks will be set up and attendees are asked to bring a basketball, soccer ball, Nerf foam ball or football to donate to Bridge Ministries, an outreach program for children living in poverty. For more information, visit thebridgeministries.org.
I plan to attend the event and hope some Madison County residents will join me. It’s always exciting to kick off a new football season and get to know some of the players.
Hopefully this will be a good year for the Aggies, and all the other local teams.
