James Weathers has seen a lot during his three-plus decades as a law enforcement officer — and he wants to continue on that path as long as he is able to help people.
Weathers has been Madison County’s Precinct 1 constable for seven years and is running unopposed in the March 1 election for a third term. He’s lived in Madison County since 1981 and holds a master’s license in law enforcement.
“I just love my job,” he said. “I enjoy what I do.”
As a constable, Weathers often has some undesirable chores, such as serving child support notices and eviction papers.
“When you start taking things away from people, that’s not always easy,” he said. “I’ve had to take kids out of their homes. Even going to court, you sometimes have irate people. But you also get to help a lot of people. There are some people that if they feel comfortable with you, they will come to you for assistance. I enjoy doing that for them. People have been really good to me.”
He covers the eastern portion of Madison County and said he thanks “God every day that I get to look at this beautiful country.”
Weathers previously served as a sheriff’s deputy and Normangee police chief.
“I retired in January of ’08 and decided that retirement wasn’t that great,” he said. “I love what I do and I enjoy working with — and for — the people of Madison County.”
