The Mustang baseball team came out swinging during last week’s game vs. Palestine but fell short 3-1.

Head Coach Justin Grimes said pitcher Kyle Poe had a “strong effort” with nine strikeouts. The Mustangs had one hit and four errors, while the Wildcats had three hits and two errors. Mustang Alan Jaramillo had a hit and an RBI.

The Mustangs hosted Fairfield on Tuesday and play Groesbeck at 7 p.m. Friday night in Madisonville.

Lady Mustangs

The Lady Mustangs scored 17 runs in the first three innings against Palestine, allowing them to capture an easy victory.

A three-run homer by Delilah Dodson and a two-run homer by Jai Sergruiff during the first inning and an RBI double by Kacelyn Jarrell, a two-run single by Lacey Ketchum, an RBI single by Emilie Blakley and an RBI single by Serguiff in the second inning put the Lady Mustangs on the board early in the game, said Head Coach Ashley Segler.

Ketchum racked up five RBI on three hits.

“[Pitcher] Jewel Smith shut down Palestine while she was in the circle,” Segler said. “Palestine managed just one hit off of Smith, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during her three innings of work.”

The girls added five more runs in the top of the third.

“The inning looked promising as Ketchum tripled, scoring Jarrell, Kayley Smith and Kandance Smith to kick things off,” Segler said. “That was followed up by Dodson’s single, bringing home Chloe Olvera.”

Six Lady Mustang hitters combined for 13 hits, 15 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Madisonville hosted Fairfield on Tuesday and will host Somerville on Friday.
