Former Mustangs work in summer


Matt Rudis has been playing well in summer baseball.

The Madisonville High School graduate is pitching for the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

In three starts, the right-hander had no record and a 0.69 earned run average. He struck out 14 in 13 innings.

The sophomore had his most effective outing July 3, when he allowed one hit in six scoreless innings. He matched his season high of six strikeouts.

As a freshman for Texas Christian University, he had no record and a 8.22 ERA in nine relief appearances.

More baseball

Pitcher Zach Poe had no record, two saves and a 4.59 ERA in 12 relief appearances for Great Bend in the Sunflower league. The right-hander out of Madisonville High struck out 32 in 15.2 innings. He hit .241 with two runs batted in. Poe redshirted his freshman year at Sam Houston State University and will play for Paris Junior College this year.

Pitcher Bryce Bennett had no record and a 5.04 ERA in six appearances for the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas league. The former Mustang pitched for Cisco College as a freshman.


Chris Scott is a redshirt freshman defensive lineman for Sam Houston State. He played for the Mustangs.

Men's rodeo

Madisonville graduates Colby Lovell and James Arnold finished second in the team roping finals of the Reno Rodeo and earned $1,140. They placed eighth in the average to collect $587 and tied for eighth in the first round to earn $196.

As of July 10, Arnold ranked sixth among team roping heelers in the Texas Circuit standings with $12,005.70 in earnings, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association site. Lovell ranked 14th among team roping headers in the Texas Circuit with $9,266.71.
