The holiday season has arrived, and that means several local businesses will have altered schedules in the coming weeks.
Madisonville and North Zulch school districts will be closed for winter break from Dec. 19-30.
Several upcoming events are planned around the county, including the following:
- The annual Madison County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 3. This year’s theme is “Winter Wonderland.”
- Pathway of Light is set for Dec. 8-11 at First Baptist Church on the corner of Elm and Trinity streets. Several area churches join forces for this annual event, which is free to the public, but reservations are encouraged.
According to thepathwayoflight.com, the event is “the recreation of the life of Christ from birth to resurrection … The script is based solely upon the gospels beginning with the Gospel of Luke to provide a basis for the sets, cast, dialogue and narratives.”
The live outdoor action scenes involve a cast of about 250 local residents who depict baby Jesus in the manger, the place where Jesus met His first disciples and the Lord’s supper. Scenes include live animals and horseback soldiers.
Patrons are led through the pathway in groups of 25. Tours leave every 1o minutes each night beginning at 6 p.m. Donations are accepted.
- KBTX-TV’s annual Food for Families drive is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Truman Kimbro Center. Donated canned goods remain in the county where they are donated and are distributed by the Brazos Valley Food Bank for school backpack programs, senior citizen needs, family boxes and more. Last year’s Food for Families Drive brought in more than 13,000 pounds of canned goods amounting to $8,889.46 in donations.
- The Capt. John McAdams Chapter will honor all military veterans at the annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Dec. 7 in the Madison County Courthouse Annex on the south side of the Madisonville Square. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony honoring all veterans on the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan.
- The Madison County Chamber of Commerce Chili Contest is set for Dec. 8 at the Truman Kimbro Center. Judging starts at 10 a.m., and the event is open to the public at 11 a.m. Cost is $5 for a bowl of chili. Entry form and fee deadline is Nov. 30; teams can enter for $20 which includes a table and electricity. Cash awards will be given for first, second and third places.
