Iola student garners honor

Hailey Mallett has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 PSTAT test. Hailey had demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success.

•Please join us Saturday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. to help raise money for Easton Evans, son of Red and Emily Evans, who was injured in an ATV accident. The evening will begin at 4:30 with a Mallett Bros barbecue dinner. Plates are $10 each (children 5 and younger are free). Dinner will be followed by a live auction and bucket pull auction. Meal tickets and bucket pull tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event. This event will take place at Main Street Market.

There will be an Evan’s family goat benefit goat roping series, with the first being this Saturday Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. The first series will be held at Silver Horse Ranch Arena. The address is 4045 Golden Eagle Drive in Bryan, 77808. Open goat roping is $10 a man; 12 and under goat roping and dummy roping is $5 per man, as well as with 8 and under dummy roping. Concession and shirt will be available. All proceeds go to the Evan’s family benefit. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported this family, they are outstanding people.

•Iola Fun Day vendors are needed. This is a great opportunity to promote your business locally. There is always a great turnout for Iola Fun Day. They are looking for vendors to sell food, arts and crafts. Let’s line Main Street. Please contact Brandybradicich@yahoo.com for further information.

This years’ Iola Fun Day will be Oct. 21. This is always a wonderful family friendly event the weekend of homecoming. Events taking place taking place at the Iola Fun Day are Bulldog Dash Fun Run, parade, vendors, games, and live and silent Auctions.

•The Iola Bulldog Dash 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21,st starting at 8 a.m. Registration will open at 7 a.m. at the Iola Fire Station. The fee is $25. Registration forms are available in the HS office and must be submitted by Oct. 13 to receive a T-shirt.

•Congratulations to the 2017 Homecoming Court. The Homecoming queen candidates are Ally Johnson, Sarah Walkoviak, Maggie Webb and Lauren Wheaton. The Homecoming king candidates are Tyler Dykes, Levi Gariepy, Kyle Kildare and Colton Renick.

•Junior varsity and varsity volleyball will face off in Grapeland on Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. The lady bulldogs will also play in North Zulch on Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.
