James Ed Kirk, 96, of Iola, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, in Bryan. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Concord Cemetery Chapel in Iola, with the burial to follow at Concord Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Dawn Lee Wakefield will officiate.
James was born on Jan. 28, 1921, to Pugh and Billie Mae (Davis) Kirk in Brookshire. He served his country in the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Takanis Bay which was an escort aircraft carrier and earning such medals as the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. After the war, he spent his career working for M.W. Kellogg (which is now known as KBR) traveling around the world until his retirement.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gladys Mae (Tibbs) Kirk. He is survived by his daughter, Jimmie Dodds; his granddaughter, Paula Shults and her husband Thomas; his grandson, Paul Dodds and his wife LaSaundra (Sam); his great-grandchildren, Cody Shults, Shane Shults, and Josh Dodds; and his six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Brazos Valley Hospice.
