Longtime radio and sports broadcaster, Roy Greer, 90, of Bryan, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, in Bryan, surrounded by his loving children. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.
Roy was born on May 28, 1927, in Fort Worth, to Oren and Rhea (James) Greer. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Greer; his wife, Sunshine (Reynolds) Greer; and his daughter-in-law, Judy Greer.
Roy proudly served his country as Seaman First Class in the United States Navy during World War II and served on the USS Lexington. Following the war, he became the general manager of KSAM Radio in Huntsville. During his time in Huntsville, he met and married his wife of 65 years, Sunshine (Reynolds) Greer. From 1956 to 1961, Roy was the sports director for KORA Radio and the play-by-play broadcaster for Aggie Basketball and other Aggie sports during the Bear Bryant football era as well as covering high school football. From 1961 to 1971, Roy was the sports director and play-by-play broadcaster for KVET Radio in Austin and the play-by-play broadcaster for Longhorn Basketball and other Longhorn sports during the Darrell Royal football era as well as covering high school football and The Austin Senators and Austin Braves which were minor league baseball teams. It was also during this time that he covered President Lyndon B. Johnson when he was home in the Austin area.
Survivors include his children: Carolyn Elaine Greer Smith and husband, Hobie of Shreveport, LA; Lt. Colonel (USAF RET) Dr. Milton Greer and wife, Jayne, of Frisco, and Hal Greer of Bryan; his grandchildren, Sunnie Hooten and husband, David, Aaron Smith and wife, Meghan, A.J. Smith, Joshua Greer and wife, Melissa, Annie Greer, Catherine Greer, Ian Greer and wife, Kristin, Holland Rhea Greer and Thomas M. Greer; and his great-grandchildren, Blaise, Kannon and Skye Hooten, Hobie and Wyatt Smith, Timothy and Zachary Greer and Ethan and Adalyn Greer.
