J.L. Smith, Jr. was born Jan. 24, 1952, in Madisonville, to J.L., Sr. and Elvada (Lewis) Smith. He was accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and attended Madisonville High School. Mr. Smith worked for more than 40 years as a heavy equipment operator for J.R. Parten Oil Co. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden. Mr. Smith also enjoyed attending his church, Hopewell Missionary Baptist, and was a very active member. He served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, superintendent of his class and he sang in the choir. He could do just about anything he set his mind to do including carpentry and plumbing. Mr. Smith dearly loved his family and strived to be a role model, faithful father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Smith passed away on April 23, 2016, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.L. Smith and Elvada Lewis Smith; a daughter, Loretta Byrd; and brother, Henry Lee Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory are wife Lois Smith of Madisonville; sons, Donny Byrd and Joshua Smith of Madisonville; brothers, Alvin (Lois) Smith of Louisiana and James Smith Sr. of Madisonville; sisters, Mary Smith of Madisonville, Tressie Ann Harrell of Madisonville and Dorothy (Bobby) Bradley of Dallas; Aunt, Laura Helen Johnson of Mexia; grandchildren, Kynara Williams, Donyetta Byrd, Ashley Willis, Donnia Byrd, Amaya Byrd, Aaron Birks, Lee’narius Smith, J’narius Smith, Charlee Smith and Ke’licia Smith; and great-grandchildren, Zayden and Noah Gilbreath. Mr. Smith is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
