BUFFALO – The Lady Mustangs added a win to their stats in a playoff game vs. Waco-Connally in Buffalo last week, sending the ladies to the area playoff series this weekend.
Coaches credited Kacelyn Jarrell as a standout in the 11-6 win on Thursday. Jarrell had two RBI, and catcher Lacey Ketchum had three.
“Lacey Ketchum has come so far,” said Coach Miranda Butts. “When she gets up to the plate, we know she’s going to deliver.”
A first-inning rally allowed the Mustangs to cross the plate on an error. In the third inning, Madisonville scored on a single by Kayley Smith.
“After pushing across two runs in the bottom of the third, Connally faced just a 5-2 deficit,” Butts said. “An RBI single and an error set off a Connally rally. Finally Jewel Smith induced an inning-ending fly out.”
The Lady Mustangs added two more runs in the top of the fourth with a triple that brought home Jai Serguiff. Connally scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, bringing the score to 7-4. An error and RBI double sparked another Connally rally but Jewel Smith ended the inning by getting a batter to ground out.
Two runs in the bottom of the sixth helped Connally close its deficit to 11-6. An RBI triple triggered a comeback, but pitcher Jewel Smith was able to “end the threat,” Butts said.
The coach added that this could be just the second time in MHS history that the softball team has gone so far.
“We are proud, but not necessarily shocked,” Butts said. “They worked so hard to get here.”
The Lady Mustangs play Rusk at 6 p.m. Friday at Westwood and at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Westwood. Jewel Smith will be on the mound for both games.
“We feel we could be evenly matched,” Coach Butts said. “We’re just trying to maintain the hitting. Our defense has to be solid. We’re anxious and ready.”
