Lady Bulldogs upset sixth-ranked Evadale, 2-1

Last Thursday, the North Zulch softball team traveled to Livingston to play sixth ranked Evadale in the first round of the 2017 UIL softball playoffs. When they left Livingston several hours later, the “resourceful” Lady Bulldogs had pulled off a major upset by dropping Evadale, 2-1. It was a great finish to what was a great game, but there were some tense moments for North Zulch.

Early in the game, Evadale loaded the bases with no outs. The Lady Bulldogs responded by pulling a very rare “triple play”, ending the rally, and keeping the score in check. Evadale did score a run in the top of the third inning to take the lead, 1-0, but that was all they would score as the North Zulch defense and pitcher Robin Diserens kept them scoreless the rest of the way.

The Lady Bulldogs had trouble getting anything going on offense until the bottom of the seventh inning. Then the “real” drama began. Micah Coleman and Samantha Moore both got on base to finally jumpstart the North Zulch offense. Then, after two quick strikeouts, the Lady Bulldogs were down to their last out, still trailing 1-0. The next hitter (and I’m sorry we did not get her name) singled, scoring Coleman and knotting the game up at one apiece. The next hitter was Raegan Vancour, and she was hit by the Evadale pitcher, and in a very “unorthodox” manner, Samantha Moore scored the walk off winning run, sending the Lady Bulldogs on their way to the second round of the playoffs.

North Zulch, now 14-9 on the season, will take on Weimer in the second round of playoffs. Weimer defeated Holland, 2-0, in the first round and are 13-5 overall on the season. They finished second, with a 10-2 record in District 28 play. The Lady Bulldogs will have to travel about a hundred miles for the game, which will be played this Saturday, in La Grange, TX, at La Grange High School. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
