Lady Mustangs fall to Franklin

FRANKLIN — The Lady Mustangs volleyball squad lost to Franklin on the road on Friday night and fell to 7-16 on the season.

Due to weather, this was Madisonville’s first match in nearly a week.

“I don’t think the girls were rusty at all,” said head Mustang volleyball coach Raegan Shelton. “In fact, I think the break helped us if anything. Even though we lost to Franklin I think we came out and played some of our best volleyball of the season.”

It was a back-and-forth contest that needed five sets to be decided. The Mustangs won two out of the first three sets in close fashion to gain an advantage, but dropped the fourth to set up an abbreviated match to 15 points that would decided it. Franklin took the last match 15-11 to ensure a home victory.

Reagan Olivera made her presence felt on the court for the Mustangs as she recorded a total of 24 assists, 18 digs and three aces for Madisonville throughout the night. Sidnie Smith led the way with 31 digs and 5 aces. Sha’Kayla Burns’ 10 kills was the most for the Mustangs in the loss, closely followed by Jaycee Thomas with eight.

The Mustangs now have just five games until they begin their district schedule in Athens on Sep. 22. The first half of league play will take place on the road before the Mustangs return home for four straight district matches to close out the regular season.

“It’s very important that we focus and start overcoming some of our weaknesses in practice,” said Shelton. “I think we’re getting tougher but we have a long way to go.”

Madisonville continued their non-district fight on Tuesday on the road against Teague. They will return home on Friday night and welcome Caldwell to Madisonville. The Varsity matchup will take place at 5:30 p.m. while JV and the freshmen compete at 4:30.

“The girls are really starting to trust me as well as each other more and more,” said Shelton. “It’s starting to show in our play and they’re starting to connect more on the floor.”
