Lady Mustangs keep winning


The Madisonville Lady Mustangs defeated Lorena 54-45 Monday on the road in Groesbeck. Tra’dayja Smith led the team with 18 points and five rebounds. Shakayla Burns had 16 points, Zanavia Lewis had eight points and four assists and Lexi Leveston had six points.

Monday night’s win against Lorena set the table for the Lady Mustangs to meet the Taylor Ducks (21-11) Friday night in Hearne.

The Lady Mustangs defeated the Ducks 58-32, capturing the team’s 27th win of the season. Madisonville trailed by one point with 30 seconds remaining in the first, before Tylesia Roundtree rounded and put-back a miss shot giving the Mustangs an 11-10 lead at the end of one.

Madisonville carried that momentum into the second quarter outscoring Taylor 14-8 entering halftime with 25-18 lead.

“I thought we started the game slow,” said Coach Taylor. “But our defense didn’t go away it got better throughout the game and eventually [our defense] punched [Taylor] in the gut. We were trapping, hedging and pressing and that started wear them down.”

Madisonville went on a 15-3 run in the third putting the game out of reach for the Ducks.

Smith led the way with 25 points and five assists. Tylesia Roundtree had a near double-double with 12 points and seven rebounds.

“Tylesia had such a good game,” said Taylor. “She has been working hard on her post moves and footwork in practice and it really showed Friday night. She played great!”

Burns had eight points and six rebounds and Leveston added six points and five rebounds in the win.
