Lady Mustangs poised for 2017

The new season is under way for a new-look Madisonville women’s basketball squad.

The Mustangs impressed in 2016 with 30 wins, including four victories in the postseason before falling to Liberty Hill in the Regional Finals.

The 2016 Mustangs were very senior-heavy and were able to take advantage of that experience with a deep playoff run. This year, Madisonville will have to turn to new leaders as the six seniors from last year have moved on. The Mustangs have a new set of five players who will compete in their final seasons as Mustangs in 2017.

The Mustangs dropped a low-scoring contest in Huntsville to start their season but picked up their first win in blowout fashion against Corrigan-Camden during a tournament on Friday night. They took on Concordia Lutheran last night and will have a week off before traveling to Bryan on Tuesday.

The new Mustang seniors include Latayvia Byrd, Kennedy Cooper, Tylesia Roundtree, Kaylee Reynolds, Shakayla Burns and Tra’dayja Smith.

Madisonville is looking to create a new identity on the court after an extremely successful campaign last season, in which they dominated their District.

The 2016 Mustangs went nearly two months without losing a single game. This included postseason wins over Lorena in the Bi-District Playoff, Taylor in the Area Playoff, Gatesville in the Regional Quarterfinals and Diboll in the State-Regional Semifinals. The team was also a perfect 8-0 in District in the regular season.

The Mustangs will begin their District slate of games this season on the road against Fairfield on Jan. 5. They will host Palestine for their first home District bout of the season on Jan. 9. The regular season will end on the road in Mexia and the State playoffs will begin with the Bi-District round on Feb. 12.
