Lady Mustangs post two W’s

The Lady Mustang softball team is now 18-6-1 after a pair of wins over Groesbeck and Mexia last week.

Madisonville’s Jewel Smith pitched the entire game vs. Groesbeck and had two hits, as did Delilah Dodson. The team had a total of 12 hits and despite four errors, outplayed the Lady Goats.

“With eight runs in the first three innings, the team left no doubt about the eventual outcome,” said Coach Miranda Butts. “An RBI double by Delilah Dodson and a passed ball in the second inning fueled the offense early.”

Kayley Smith racked up two RBI on two hits, with a double in the third inning and a single in the fourth.

“A bases-loaded walk scored Brooke Gatlin for the [third] inning’s first run,” Butts said. “That was followed up by a double, plating Jewel Smith and Kandace Smith.”

The girls built on the lead with eight runs in the fourth inning. Kacelyn Jarrell led off with a single, bringing a runner home. That was followed up by Dodson’s single, which netted two more runs.

The Lady Mustangs hosted Mexia on Thursday and took the game 13-6 in seven innings.

The girls scored four runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Brooke Gatlin, a home-plate steal by Kandace Smith and an RBI single by Lacey Ketchum.

Pitcher Jewel Smith racked up three RBI on three hits, doubled in the second and fourth innings and singled in the fifth. She got the win for the Lady Mustangs despite allowing six runs. She struck out 13, walked one and gave up 12 hits.

Four Lady Mustangs scored runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Emilie Blakley scored on an RBI double by Jai Serguiff in the second.

“After pushing across two runs in the top of the third, Mexia faced just a 2-1 deficit,” Coach Butts said. “An RBI double and a follow-up single fueled their comeback. Finally Smith’s pitching was able to end the threat.”

The girls played Palestine on Tuesday and host Fairfield on April 5.
