The Madisonville Lady Mustangs concluded their non-league schedule and began District play this week with a win over Navasota last Tuesday and a loss to Fairfield on Friday.
The split puts Madisonville’s overall record at 8-10 and 0-1 in District.
The Lady Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak with a low scoring, home win over Navasota. Madisonville was able to hold the Rattlers under double-digit point totals in both the first and third quarters en route to a 46-43 victory.
Navasota scored 5 unanswered points in the final few possessions to cut the deficit to one score. However, they’d run out of time and were unable to even the score at 46 apiece.
The low-scoring affair was an all-around team effort by the Mustangs with three different players at the top of three major categories. Shakayla Burns led Madisonville in scoring with 12 points on the night, Latayvia Byrd recorded 5 assists and Tylisea Roundtree came down with 12 rebounds.
The Mustangs would find themselves on the short end of another close, low-scoring contest when they began District play in Fairfield on Friday. The Eagles were able to break a 46-46 tie in the final possession of the game to win 48-46.
No Mustang posted double-digits points in the game, but Roundtree, Shakayla Burns and Jyah Burns all scored 8. Roundtree also led the team in rebounds with 8, 5 of which were offensive. Madisonville came away with 19 rebounds overall, 11 of which were offensive.
The Lady Mustangs continued conference play with a matchup against Palestine last night and will have Friday off. They’ll get back at it in Athens on Tuesday and will return to Madisonville to host Mexia on Jan. 19.
