Lady Mustangs win district opener

They say offense sells tickets, defense wins games and judging by the defensive pressure Madisonville put on Fairfield Friday night that saying rings true.

The Lady Mustangs, who held the Eagles to just five points in the first quarter, holding a 28-18 lead at the half, defeated Fairfield 61-49.

“It’s always great to win, especially the first game of district,” said Head Coach Shana Taylor. “We had a sluggish start but our defense came through as always.”

Senior Lexi Leveston led the team recording a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Shakayla Burns had 10 points and six rebounds, Tra’Dayja Smith had nine points and four assists and Tyana Brown had nine points and grabbed five rebounds in the win.

“One of the things that I love about this group is they are emotionally invested and have a real passion for the game,” Taylor said. “I know sometimes it can be viewed as arrogance but I’m willing to live with that criticism and will never deter the girls from showing emotion.”

The Lady Mustangs have a bye this weekend and will return to district play Jan. 17 at home against Athens.
