Ten-year-old Matthew Pope was recently released from Texas Children’s Hospital after spending 40 days recovering from an accident.
The Madisonville youth was greeted by a large welcome party at Lake Madisonville last week. His aunt, Heidi Clopton, said the support has been overwhelming.
Matthew was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital on Texas 21 then later transported by Life Flight helicopter to Texas Children’s Hospital on Jan. 9.
Pope, who has three brothers, is expected to make a full recovery, Clopton said. His younger brother Jaden also was in the accident and went to the emergency room but was released that night.
“He had some staples put in but he’s doing great,” Clopton said.
Matthew, on the other hand, is in a neck brace for the next several months and will have to do “lots of therapy.”
His skull was fractured and he had a small stroke and numerous staples were put in his head.
The family is not seeking donations but has already benefited from the generosity of the local community, Clopton said. Matthew will remain in the homebound school program for the rest of the year.
Clopton said she wanted to emphasize the kindness and professionalism of the doctors and nurses who cared for her nephews.
