Madisonville’s Emily Sanford brought rabbits to show at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at NRG Stadium on Saturday.
“This was a great experience,” said Sanford. “The committee members checked us in then made sure everything was in order and checked the animals. It was all about a two hour process, which was good.”
Sanford has been working with rabbits since she was in third grade and is already incredibly experienced in the field. Outside of rabbits, she has assisted friends with there animals and even helped one show chickens.
“I won junior and senior showmanships with the rabbits,” said Sanford. “I’ve thought about working with cattle as well in the past but they’re obviously bigger and more difficult to accommodate. They’re also much more expensive, so the rabbits are the most profitable for me.”
Sanford showed two pens, or six total rabbits, on her trip to Houston. She will show nine total as a Madison County Fair Ambassador, for which she will receive a scholarship of $150 or more.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began on Feb. 27 and will last until March 18 and features numerous animals in which will be auctioned or presented in show. The Madison County Fair will being on March 17 and last for a week.
