Madisonville Junior High Principal Heath Brown is taking a leap and will soon be movin’ on up to helm the high school.
He replaces Shaye Murphy, who announced last month that he is returning to accept a principal position in his hometown of Slaton.
Brown said he’s spent the majority of his education career at the high school level and is looking forward to returning.
“It will be more of a challenge,” he said. “When that position opened up, I told them I would be interested in it.”
Brown, 49, is from north Texas and accepted a job as assistant principal at Madisonville Junior High about five years ago, later transitioning to principal.
Although Brown and his wife Wendy are parents, their children are grown and “out of the house,” so he devotes much of his time to school-related events.
Brown said he’s already “going back and forth” between campuses and will be available to assist the new junior high principal through the transition, depending on when that hire is made. MCISD Superintendent Keith Smith said Monday that administrators are working on hiring a new intermediate school principal, to replace the retiring Marc Hodges and will follow that up with a search for a junior high principal.
Brown was an obvious choice to lead the high school, Smith said. In fact, they offered him the job the day after interviews were conducted.
Brown said he’s looking forward to working with the youth at the high school.
“I had all those students in junior high,” he said. “We are familiar with each other.”
