With the regular season kickoff just days away, Harvey has thrown the Mustangs a curveball.
Madisonville spent a considerable amount of time preparing to host Diboll to start the much-anticipated 2017 campaign. Instead, they will welcome Teague to Mustang Stadium on Friday night at 7:30.
“This week has certainly been an adjustment for us with the schedule change,” said Nail. “But in situations like this you can’t worry about the things you can’t control. The purpose of a non-district matchup is to get better for your district schedule. Week one will never make or break a season so I expect our kids to respond well and give Teague a good game.”
The Teague Lions enter the year as a serious state championship contender. They find themselves in the top 10 of all relevant polls and finished 8-2 last year. The Lions made it all the way to the regional semifinals in 2016 before they fell to Cameron 23-6.
Teague’s offense rushed for 3,766 yards and 42 touchdowns a year ago and Coach Donnie Osborn called returning lineman Marcus Williams the “anchor” of that ground attack.
“They feature impressive athleticism in space as well as size and strength up front,” said Nail. “There’s no doubt that they will give us a look that will make us better as the season progresses.”
The Mustangs got back to their normal practice routine on Wednesday and Coach Nail stressed how excited his team is to get the season underway. Madisonville will handle their business today a little differently than what you might normally see on a Thursday before game day in order to be as prepared as possible for their impromptu opponent.
Madisonville and Teague will kickoff their seasons at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night at Mustang Stadium. Check in with the Madisonville Meteor on Facebook for in-game updates as well as a game recap following the action.
