Mary Neil Poole Linnenberg of Houston passed away at her home on Sunday, August 28, 2016, surrounded by her family. She died on her 88th birthday after a year-long struggle with cancer. Born to Rhoda and U.J. (Man) Poole in Madisonville, Texas, she graduated from high school in 1945 and went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught school in the Houston Independent School District for 35 years, finishing at John H. Reagan High School in the English Department. After retiring from HISD in 1985, she taught for six years at Houston Community College.
Mary was a devout Christian and an elegant woman who cherished her family. She was an active member of First Baptist Church Spring Branch and later Memorial Drive Baptist Church. Mary’s husband, George Linnenberg, preceded her in death in 1996. Mary was affectionately known as Mom, Mamaw, Memaw, Gigi and Aunt Dee to those who loved her.
Mary is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and David Shelfer of Houston and Elaine and Larry Thompson of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Mark and Brian Shelfer and his wife Catherine, and Andrew, Alyssa and Jack Thompson; four great grandchildren, Avery and Cate Shelfer and Brooks and Bennett Shelfer; a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Billie Poole, of The Woodlands, and their daughter and son-in-law Pam and Elvin Brownlee, of Andrews, Texas and their children Eric and Cason. She is also survived by her nieces Janet Landry and Marsha McClesky and her husband Peter.
Friends may call at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Drive Baptist Church, 325 North Piney Point Road, on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m. There will be a reception at the church following the service. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
