MCISD AD continues to build team

Madisonville’s new athletic director is moving swiftly to assemble a team of winners on his coaching staff.

Rusty Nail was hired in December to serve as AD and head football coach. Nail, who led the Mart Panthers to state championships in 2006 and 2010, proposed last month the hire of Brady Conger of Smithson Valley as defensive coordinator and district-wide strength coach – which the school board unanimously confirmed. Conger, who arrived in Madisonville last week, also will serve as first assistant athletic director.

“When I’m not here, he’ll be in charge,” Nail said.

Nail confirmed Monday he is negotiating a contract with Russell Urbantke of Plano West to serve as offensive coordinator.

“Both [Conger and Urbantke] worked at Mart,” Nail said. “These are guys that have worked with me before. I have confidence in what they do, and I know what to expect.”

Additionally, Russell Smith, a current candidate for Precinct 1 county commissioner, previously served as assistant AD but has said he will stay on as a teacher until he is eligible for retirement in a couple of years.

Nail also confirmed Monday that he reassigned Coach Bo Dees from head softball coach to working with boys’ athletics.

“We’re making some other changes later this week,” Nail added. “Everything is rolling along well. The kids are buying in. I haven’t heard any complaints. I’m excited about our season.”
