My wife and I drove out to Wal-Mart Thanksgiving Day around 6:15 p.m. to see if it would even be possible to get into the store to look at some deals. As we approached the parking lot, I simply turned into the Madisonville Fire Department parking lot, and we made haste back to our home. The parking lot was so full, you couldn’t have squeezed another vehicle in it and people were packed in the store like sardines. I imagine some people went early to stand in front of their special item so they didn’t miss out on that much-discounted gift idea for Christmas.
Sadly, many people put more effort in getting to a great deal on Black Friday than they do in seeking out the Lord. All over America we have church parking lots that are empty because not many people are as passionate about God as they are about shopping for that discounted gift.
Just think what would happen if people put as much effort in God as they do in Black Friday deals. Our churches would be filled with people hungry for the Truth. There would be lines outside the doors waiting to get in, and they wouldn’t allow anything to stand in their way of getting to God’s Word. It wouldn’t matter who the preacher was, or what kind of music was being sung. They would be looking for God and finding Him, no matter how long they had to wait in line, or what time it was.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
If there was ever a time in our country that this is true, it is now. We see all kinds of wickedness being spread; and yet, we are so worried about getting the latest and greatest material items, we just watch as this world devours itself with hate and self-gratification.
Yes, I understand that you have a right to seek out the best deal you can find so you can save money on your Christmas shopping. Yes, I realize that you can be Christian and still Black Friday shop. However, what I don’t understand is when you put more effort in those things than you do in seeking out God.
We find every excuse in the world not to go to church. We make excuses as to why we can’t tithe and give our offerings. But, we have no problem going into a mountain of debt to buy the material things of this life so we can measure up to our friends and neighbors.
I call this “Black Friday Faith”.
But, I think it’s high time we start showing some Christ-like faith.
How about this week you start a new trend in your family? How about you don’t allow anything to get in your way of going to church and worshiping? How about you don’t allow anything to get in the way of seeking out God’s will in your life? How about you don’t allow anything to keep you from reading the Word and applying it to your life?
Oh yeah, and by the way, if you’re looking for a perfect church, it doesn’t exist. And if it did, when you or I walked in, it wouldn’t be perfect anymore.
Get serious about God, and He just might get serious about you. He’s waiting for you to seek him out with all your heart, so He can fill you up with all His Spirit.
It’s time for a lot more Jesus faith and a lot less “Black Friday Faith”.
God bless and have a great day in the Lord.
