MPD, city affirm faith with stickers

The people in Madisonville have spoken: God definitely is the one to trust.

So much so, city residents asked to have the phrase “In God We Trust” placed on the back of Police Department vehicles.

Capt. Richard Morris of the MPD said the issue began a few weeks ago, when patrol officers were getting questions from Madisonville residents about the phrase.

“This started a couple of months ago,” he said. “The officers began asking us because residents were asking them. As time went on, we got even more questions, so we decided to post a poll on our Facebook page to give the public a chance to weigh in on the issue.”

Morris said that after the overwhelming support in favor of doing it, the department decided to have it done to all 13 police vehicles.

“More than 1,900 people responded positively to the question, and the question was shared more than 300 times,” he said. “It was taken down after it was found there was confusion as to whether it was Madisonville, Texas, or Madisonville, Ky., was the subject of the post.”

People from Kentucky started to get involved in the discussion, because they believed it was their organization, Morris said, so the department decided at that point was more than enough positive response.

“I kept up with it up until 700 comments, and in all of that there were only two negative responses, both said, ‘No,’ without any comment,” he said. “After that, I couldn’t keep up with it.”

Morris also said the department was 100 percent for the idea, based on responses during a staff meeting held last week.

A local business, Seasonal Sass Décor, had the signs made and donated them to the department.
