The annual Texas Mushroom Festival, 16 years strong in Madisonville, will kick off Oct. 14 at the Courthouse Square.
Festival Chairman Laura Lawrenz said this year boasts some changes that will make the festival more enjoyable.
Lawrenz said that the Taste of Texas will be is under one tent this year for both the wineries and the biergarten — all in front of the Woodbine Hotel. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with live entertainment by the Westernaires from 3-7 p.m.
Lawrenz said there will be two televisions in the area which will air the Texas A&M Aggies game
“We have 12 wineries and 10 Texas craft Beers, including one German beer,” she said.
Entry to the tasting area is $25 and comes with a choice of a commemorative beer or wine glass as well as five tasting samples.
Combo tickets can be purchased for $45, which comes with both commemorative glasses and 10 tasting tickets. Entry for designated drivers and people under 21 is only $10 and comes with a free snack bag.
Instead of a panel, there will be one chef, Louis Hernandez from Jimmy G’s restaurant in Humble, who will demonstrate four mushroom dishes and provide appetizers for the crowd to taste.
Also, the quilt show has been moved to the Kimbro Center along with the art and photography exhibit.
The Shiitake 5K run has a new T-shirt design as well as a commemorative mushroom medal to be given to all participants, and now features a Lil’ Shiitake 1 Mile.
For the car show, two 4x4 events have been added.
The festival raises funds to put on the next year’s event, and also provides money for scholarships, which go to the festival’s ambassadors. This year’s ambassadors are Robin Diserens CiCi Graham and Cassidy Brown. The prestigious role is awarded to local high school students each year who assist festival-goers with directions and information.
