The Mustang freshman football team entered Thursday night’s game with a record of 8-1 on the season, needing just one more win to clinch district.
“Come on defense; set the tone!” yelled Coach Brad Taylor from the 20-yard line as his freshmen lined up for a punt return with 7:12 to go in the first quarter.
Set the tone they did, as the defense blocked the oncoming punt. Defense has been the calling card for this freshmen squad all season long and Thursday night against Tarkington was no different as the Mustangs defeated the Longhorns 35-6 in their final game of the season.
The Mustangs shut out the Longhorns in the first half with a 28-0 halftime lead, and it was much of the same after intermission with the Mustangs’ stingy defense only giving up six points on the night.
With the win the freshmen clinched the District 11-4A title with an overall record of 9-1.
“I couldn’t be more proud of these young guys,” said Coach Taylor. “All their hard work and dedication to our program – they’ve earned this.”
