Mustangs conclude offseason in Cameron

CAMERON — The Madisonville Mustangs competed in their second and final preseason matchup on Thursday against the Yoemen in Cameron.

The scrimmage included varsity as well as JV and was originally scheduled for Friday evening, but was moved up because of the storm.

Madisonville Head Coach Rusty Nail was pleased with the Mustangs’ effort against one of the top teams in the state on Thursday.

He didn’t state a specific area the team needs to improve, but stressed the need to keep getting better with week one right around the corner.

“We ran the ball well again offensively,” said Nail. “Defensively, we got to the ball well overall and I thought we matched up with them offensively. Right now, we’re just looking to improve in all areas of our game and continue to get better each week.”

Earlier in the week, Nail stated that the Yoemen were as good or better than any team the Mustangs would play in the regular season.

The scrimmage in Cameron isn’t the only change Harvey brought to the early local high school football season. As of now, the week 1 home matchup with Diboll is still scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. But the JB Blue game in Diboll scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. has been canceled. The JV Red matchup with Centerville will still take place on Thursday, but will now be played in Madisonville at 5:30.

Despite the changes caused by the weather so close to the start of the 2017 season, Nail is determined to keep his experienced roster focused on business as usual.

“Weather will not affect us in preparation whatsoever,” said Nail. “We only worry about the things we can control and Harvey is not one of those. We will be prepared whenever and wherever we kick off the year.”
