Seniors Johnny Simpson and Kandace Smith were honored by their classmates on Friday and named the Homecoming King and Queen for 2017.

“It’s an accomplishment and a really great feeling,” said Smith moments after she was crowned. “It was also surprising. I feel like there were a lot of girls that ran and any of them also deserved it. Everybody worked hard and everybody’s beautiful. I thank my family and friends for all of the support they have given me.”

The two recipients as well as grade princesses and other Queen candidates were presented on the field of a packed Mustang Stadium during halftime of Friday night’s football game against Lorena. A family member accompanied each princess and contestant onto the field.

Representing the freshman class as princess was Andy Hinojosa. Maria Ayala was honored with the sophomore princess crown and Samantha Vazquez represented the juniors.

The Queen contestants outside of Smith included Grace Culbreth, Odalys Hernandez, Morgan Manning and Kaylee Reynolds. The King contestants outside of Simpson included Daniel Hernandez and Cornelius Merchant. Simpson, however, was chosen a couple of nights before at the annual Homecoming bonfire and carnival.

“It feels good to Homecoming King,” said Johnny Simpson on the honor. “I had some really great competition and it was just a memorable night overall. Everyone was out here supporting in the stands tonight so it was really special.”
