Mustangs extend win record to 4-1

The Madisonville basketball team is on a roll, with another district win vs. Palestine last week.

The Mustangs are now 19-6 overall and 4-1 in district play.

Sophomore Sam Bennett scored 16 points in the Tuesday night game, while Tommy Holiday, also a sophomore, led in rebounds with nine. Sophomore guard Cornelius Merchant didn’t score any points but was key in leading Madisonville to the victory, 52-45, said Head Coach Brian Thurmond.

“This was another come-from-behind win,” Thurmond said. “Sixteen of our 19 wins we have come back from second half deficits in a total team effort.”

Thurmond added that the local crowd support has been phenomenal.

The junior varsity team also beat Palestine, bringing its overall record to 12-7, and 2-3 in district.

The teams were off Friday and returned to district play at Fairfield on Tuesday. They travel to Groesbeck on Friday, Feb. 12. The final game of the regular season is at home Feb. 16 vs. Mexia.
