Mustangs fall to Lufkin

The Lady Mustangs dropped their last home game of the non-district schedule to Lufkin in straight sets on Friday. It was the team’s final home game until they take on Athens on Oct. 10.

“I think we looked a lot tougher this time out,” said head Madisonville volleyball coach Raegan Shelton. “We were a lot tougher at the service line and my two captains, La’Tayvia Byrd and Kaylee Reynolds, continue to be our consistent leaders vocally.”

The Mustangs started out close with a 25-20 loss in game 1, but it only got worse from there as they dropped the next two matches 25-17 and 25-14. Sidnie Smith led the way for the Mustangs with 18 digs on the night and 3 aces. Raegan Olivera recorded 8 assists and Khyra Cooper had 6 kills.

“At this point we need to be more consistent in our overall play,” said Shelton. “We also need to minimize errors and find ways to put the ball away.”

The Mustangs concluded their non-district schedule with a matchup in Navasota on Tuesday night. They will travel to Athens on Friday for their first district game at 5:30 p.m. They will also play three more road meetings over the next two weeks and conclude the stretch with a bye day on Friday, Oct. 6.

“We really need to be mentally prepared to be focused and have the right mindset and be ready to get better in practice,” said Shelton. “I don’t think playing on the road will affect us, but we will need to stay discipline and keep fighting to enhance our mental toughness.”

Madisonville will return home on Oct. 10 to host Athens and play the same district opponents they will on the road a couple of weeks before in the same order. The brightest news for the Mustangs is that they will play their final four matches at home. The regular season is set to conclude on Oct. 20 when the team takes on Palestine for the second time.
